WALKS WITH MARCO

WALKS WITH MARCO

I have been taking a lot of walks since Marco was born. Over the last 11 months, I have noticed a rapid change in construction projects in my neighborhood, Museum Park. There had been some new real estate development in previous years mostly of modest scale. However, over the last few months there has seen a volume of development, at a speed that has left me in deep panic.

I witnessed the neighborhood turn into a potentiality of exchange value overnight. Empty modern cubes dot the landscape. Personal security cameras mounted on these new cubes point outward in paranoia, recording hours of unfinished sidewalks. My feeling of panic is reflected in the speedy pace of construction, a game of musical chairs. Builders rushing houses to market on margin in the attempt to sell at a profit while the iron is hot.

I wonder about my new neighbors. I wonder if a person who can take out a $650,000 mortgage would want to live next to me. I wonder if this person exists. I wonder how my infant son will keep up.
